Moving Thoughts Friday

Every Friday I’m going to ask a question. The questions I choose might be ambiguous on purpose. The goal is to have you answer the question according to your beliefs, where you’re at in life or a circumstance that might have recently impacted you. The only thing I ask is that you provide an explanation for why you answered the way you did.
It’s my hope to understand you better through this and also to gain a greater understanding of humanity and how people make decisions.
I saw the following on a recent show highlighting great Olympic moments. Reached in and grabbed me. Hasn’t let go.

Ever lose something, but somehow are better for it?
*I’m going to be offline on Monday. You know, pretending I’m competing in the Olympics & such.

  1. Wow, tough question today. I'd say falling in love definitely qualifies.

Happy weekend and Olympics watching! :)

  2. Can't even find the words to describe my reaction to that video.
    Powerful.
Have I ever lost something, but was better for it?
Exchanging a lie for the truth ...

    yeah, that works for me.

  3. I've seen that video before--we actually use a Derek Redmond video at the ministry where I work to encourage men to never give up!

I've definitely had moments of losing my pride or dignity and yeah, on the other side, I do think a person becomes better for it when their pride takes a knock. :)

  4. Very powerful video. As a parent you just see it in a whole different light when his father comes out to be with him.

Lost anything - yes, an office job.
Been better for it - absolutely. That's when I went back for a Masters in Special Ed and went back to teaching. It filled my heart.

  5. I've never seen that video, but it's powerful. Finishing no matter what, no matter how you've been knocked down. Now that's awesome.

  6. Oh man, that clip brought me to tears. I really felt for him. Have to think on that question now. Too busy looking for a tissue.

  7. That is one of my FAVORITE inspirational videos. I love that his FATHER encouraged him to finish, even waving off the trainer(?), who was probably insisting on what Derek "should" do (i.e., get off the track and tend to his injury). What a great symbol for our heavenly Father, knowing exactly what His children need from Him to help us finish the race.

Total Olympic junkie here... I have no immediate answer to your question but will be thinking about it over the weekend (in between Olympic events, that is..)

  8. My eyes filled with tears as I watched this video. The love of his father carried him through. I lost a job four and a half years ago. It hurt for a while but I realized that God, my family and my friends still loved me. A great lesson I learned through that experience.

  9. This is a tough question for me today too! I so believe that there is gain in loss, but applying it in life is so very difficult right now.

Thanks for making me think Wendy.

  10. I cried.

Sometimes what we perceive as failure turns out to be our finest moment.

  11. This is why I cry when I watch the Olympics!

I was a cheerleader in junior high. I completely messed up my first tryout to be on the high school squad. I was so disappointed. That year I got involved in with speech and drama, and I absolutely loved it. I never tried out for cheerleader again.

  12. Sometimes it takes more courage to let go than to insist on finishing the race. This young man did both with the help of his father. It's obvious that he is a winner with a relationship like that to live out. A good lesson for us and our Heavenly Father. Great video - thanks for sharing.

  13. Wow, just wow! I agree with Sarah. Sometimes, falling in love, even if it does't last forever, is the kind of loss that teaches you the most about what you want, what your heart needs, and how strong you are when the heart mends itself.
