Gets You Right Here

I don’t have a single joke memorized, but I have dozens of movie lines filed away in my gray matter. There is just something about powerful visual imagery, a moving story and a well delivered line…

Remember These?

“You make me want to be a better man.” As Good as It Gets

“Yo, Adrian.” Rocky

“May the Force be with you.” Star Wars

“Carpe diem. Seize the day boys, Make your lives extraordinary.” Dead Poets Society

“We’ll always have Paris.” Casablanca

And now for my favorite line(s):

Juba (Djimon Hounsou) telling Maximus (Russell Crow) in Gladiator, “Not yet.”

The symbolism and meaning behind his words moves me to tears every time.

A close second:

Jenny (Robin Wright Penn) in Forrest Gump crouched low to the ground hidden in a cornfield saying, “Dear God, make me a bird so I can fly, far far away from here. Dear God…”

I think every single person has felt this feeling at one point or another. Need I say more?

Which line from a movie “gets you right here”?

  1. Love Mel Gibson's battle cry of "Freedom!"

From GWTW: "I can't think about that right now. If I do, I'll go crazy. I'll think about that tomorrow."

To Kill a Mockingbird: "I think there's just one kind of folks. Folks."

  2. Love the pictures, Wendy! Man, I need to watch more movies because I can't remember any lines right now. Oh, wait! What about from Napoleon Dynamite, "Get your own tots". That's a fav with my kids :) Not quite a heartfelt one, however.

  3. Hi Wendy! I'm with Tess. I can't remember any movie lines today! I think my brain is dead. I've just spent the past weekend in major book edits and writing a proposal. I can't think! But I love the lines you mentioned! Hope you have a great day!

  4. Lol, I like Tess's line. I really can't think of any others. Or at least not ones that are my favorite. I remember lines from songs much better :) One of my new favorites is from Switchfoot "This is Home" which I like to listen to while I am working on my story. It goes:

And I got my heart set on what happens next,
I've got my eyes wide, it's not over yet
    We are miracles
    And we're not alone.

    I love that!

  5. I actually posted about this a couple of weeks ago (http://ignoranthistorian.com/2009/05/my-ten-favorite-movie-moments/). My two biggest are probably from Mansfield Park and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.

  6. Can't pick just one!

(Since Secret Garden is playing on your playlist and that's the song playing in Jerry Maguire when Jerry says to Dorothy) "You complete me" and then of course she says "You had me at Hello" - SIGH

Pride and Prejudice (Mr. Darcy speaking to Elizabeth Bennet) "You have bewitched me body and soul"

Too many lines from When Harry Met Sally (quite possibly my favorite movie of all time), but to choose just one, Harry comes to her at the end of the movie and says "I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible"

Who's a hopeless romantic? Uhh, apparently me. :)

  7. Oh! I love this post--very visually appealing. Let's see, favorite lines.

The Cutting Edge: "What? Do you shower once a week?" reply "Is that an invitation?"

When Harry Met Sally: "That is just like you Harry, just when I want to hate you, you go and say something perfect and I can't hate you..."

My kids love Napolean Dynamite too. Sometimes I'll hear "Bow to your sensei" around the house.

    Shaking my head...

  8. Gosh i really need to watch more movies. I can't keep the lines straight. Although I have a sneaking suspicion if I watched Mama Mia, i'd know every word.

  9. The only movie that's stuck in my head well enough for me to quote is The Emperor's New Groove. :$ So . . . *feel* the power!

  10. Ok this is too hard:) I can't even remember my husband's most romantic line and trust me, there haven't been all that many in 32 years:)))

  11. Unfortunately only the stupid lines NOT the most heartfelt ones that stick with me. LOL

Happy Gilmore: "The prices is WRONG, Bobby." is one of them. LOL

  12. Wendy:
Chariots of Fire: "When i run, I feel His pleasure."
That's me and writing. At least on good days.
Thanks for forcing me to think!

  13. Awesome post! I love those lines! What about: Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn? I suppose that's more book than movie. But wow - I remember my jaw dropping when I read that. No Rhett!! Come back!

Love actually...is..all.. around. That's from Love Actually. It's not a Christian movie by any means, but I love it anyway.

Hmmmm...movie lines are great. Now you have me thinking about good ones!

  14. Angie, I loved all three of those. Mel did a great job with that line!

Tess, I loved that yours was about tots! :D I've never seen ND. The pictures caught my eye as well.

Jody, I can imagine your brain would be fried w/ all the hard work you've been doing. I hope to hear your answers someday then.

Cindy, ohhh good lyrics. I love lyrics and music...clearly b/c I don't have the heart to remove my songs on here.

Ronnica, I'll have to go check out your blog.

Beth, did Harry say that after the long running scene? I identified the hopeless romantic in your answers. :D

Jill, how funny the one from Cutting Edge "gets you right here."

    T. Anne, Abba, right? My seven-year-old used to wiggle to Dancing Queen as a baby.

Danyelle, how fun you picked a cartoon!

Terri, :D Yah for 32 years!!! Hear the clapping.

    Jennifer, awesome!

Jeanette, you won the prize in my book. That one sure did have a tug and pull on my heart and I loved the connection you made with your writing.

Katie, there are some non-Christian movies that really speak to me. I'll have to share sometime. Let me know if you think of more.

Blee Ba Blee Ba Blee Ba...That's All Folks!

Hope to see you here tomorrow!

  15. Yeah, uh, we saw night at the museum 2 last weekend.

My kids walked around saying, "Dum, Dum, give me gum gum" and "Fiya powa" for the last few days. *grin*

  16. Here's the clip because I can't help myself. You'll see the line Jill mentioned in there too. :)

  20. Ooh, Wendy, your posts are both creative AND fun. Thanks for getting OUR creative juices flowing.

I would have to say, Martian Child, "Just think of it as a bigger box." Love John Cusack in the film, and after parenting my adoptive daughter thru an attachment disorder, the entire movie "gets me right there."

    :-) Hope you're having a GREAT day!

  21. I've read through your wonderful posts, and just had to comment on this one.
