Moving Thoughts Friday

Every Friday I’m going to ask a question. The questions I choose might be ambiguous on purpose. The goal is to have you answer the question according to your beliefs, where you’re at in life or a circumstance that might have recently impacted you. The only thing I ask is that you provide an explanation for why you answered the way you did.

It’s my hope to understand you better through this and also to gain a greater understanding of humanity and how people make decisions.

Did you ever wish you were a twin or that you gave birth to twins? Are you a twin or do you have twins? If so, please shed light on your experience.

  1. I thought I was having twins for about a week. My husband was so excited. He was convinced we would have one boy and one girl, and boom - we'd be done having children. I wasn't convinced of anything that week except that having twins sounded painful and difficult.

  2. I never wished I was a twin but I remember being fascinated by twins as a child.
After I gave birth to my first son, I found a new respect for mother's of twins. Twice as many diapers, bottles, and demands! ;)

  3. I used to read a book series where the main characters were twins, and thought it would be cool to have one. I've always thought it would be fun to have twins myself, but as Heidi said, twice the work does not sound like tons of fun.

  4. My family history is full of twins! I didn't ever want to give birth to twins nor did I want to be a twin. Even though it sounds nice to have someone you could be so connected to that you knew each other's thoughts, that very reason is enough to deter me. Growing up, I didn't like myself much, why would I want two of me to not like...you know? I like my space. And I don't like sharing clothes!!

  5. I wished or a twin for a brief stint when I read all the Sweet Valley High books growing up. I thought, how cool would it be to switch places and mess with people, like Jessica and Elizabeth did. After I read that series, it never crossed my mind again. And a big fat no on wanting twins! :)

  6. Someone told me long ago we all have a twin in the world. I never believed it until a friend of mine sent me a photo of a girl who looked just like me on the other side of the world! There's also been a few occasions when I've seen someone who could have been the twin of a friend or family member.

I'd also love to have twins myself, God willing.

All best to you in 2012!

  7. When I was a child, I wanted to have twins, a boy and a girl. I even had names picked out for them: John and Mary Ann. I didn't let the fact that there were no twins in my family discourage me, especially when I learned the difference between identical and fraternal twins a few years later.

Gwynly and I ended up with an only, and I'm happy as can be with our gal.

  8. I wanted my last child to be a twin, because I always wanted four kids and I knew I wouldn't be able to get pregnant again (4 c-sections would have been too much), but it wasn't meant to be. Still got a great daughter though.

  10. When I was in grade school, we had four sets of twins in my grade. Two were girls, one was boys, and the other was a boy/girl set.

I was fascinated at times. They always wore the same outfit - maybe a different color shirt for the boys - and they always had each other.

They seem to communicate with a glance or a smile.

I never wanted to give birth to twins - and I didn't - but one of my main characters is a twin, so that fascination stuck and appeared in my writing.

  11. No on both counts. The thought's never even occurred to me to be or have a twin. I'm not sure what that says, but this post is my first twin thought.

  12. YES!! I grew up with a pair of twin brothers - Rory and Ryan. They were best friends and I was always so jealous. I wanted a twin. And since I knew that couldn't happen, I grew up wanting to HAVE twins. Until I actually grew up and realized how challenging that would be.

  13. No twins in my family, but I wouldn't have minded having twins. Especially considering how nightmarish my deliveries were, I could have gotten two for the price of one. ;)

  14. When I was young I really wished I had a twin. I don't know why. Maybe because twins are supposed to be those bosom companions that you can relate to without even trying?

We don't have twins in our family. I guess I always thought it would be cute to have twins, but now that I'm an adult with many children, the idea of two-at-once exhausts me! :)

  15. I am a twin!
I can't believe I'm the first one to say that today ... kept reading all the comments and waiting for someone to jump up and shout, "Twin here!"
Of course, my sister Brenda and I are fraternal twins, i.e. we don't look alike. We couldn't even convince people we were related, much less that we were twins. So, we couldn't do any of that switching places fun.
I always wanted to have twins because I had definite ideas about raising them. There was a lot of competition/comparison (or is that comparison/competition?) forced on my sister and me, especially by teachers. Not a good thing at all.

  17. Yes, especially after elementary school, I thought it would be fun to have a twin. You could trade off taking exams. I never thought about there having to be TWO grades for "us."
I made it just fine without one, but would have been fun to have a sister. I guess I never thought of a brother since I thought it would be neat to change places at select times.
    Happy New Year Blessings 2012.

  18. I always loved the bond I saw between twins. I always wanted one because there was such age differences between all of my sisters and myself. I carried twins and was so happy. I lost one. However, I truly believed God knew what he was doing. My son had the energy of two kids in one.

  19. Uh-oh. Does this mean what I think--that you are expecting twins? Or, are you writing twins into your next novel?

My mil is an identical twin, and I have twin great-aunts, Minnie and Winnie. I wanted to have twins, but God knew that would not have been a good idea. I can turn any minor situation into a full-blown drama faster than an alligator can snap, so twins would have been eighteen years of theatre-worthy episodes. We are thankful.

  20. Hi Wendy -

I'm an only child. I wanted a sibling whether it was a twin or not.

As I've watched people raise their children, I can see the benefit to having one at a time. The child receives a greater share of the attention.

    Blessings,
    Susan :)
