Moving Thoughts Friday

Every Friday I’m going to ask a question. The questions I choose might be ambiguous on purpose. The goal is to have you answer the question according to your beliefs, where you’re at in life or a circumstance that might have recently impacted you. The only thing I ask is that you provide an explanation for why you answered the way you did.

It’s my hope to understand you better through this and also to gain a greater understanding of humanity and how people make decisions.

Ode to Neil Young…Hey Hey, My My, is it better to burn out or fade away?

  1. Wow, this is a hard one. I've been burned out before, and that's no fun. It means I've stopped loving what I do--at least, the joy has gone out of it temporarily. It means I pushed myself too hard and been too busy. To a certain extent, I have control over whether I burn out.

Maybe it's better to fade away. I don't have control over whether I fade from people's minds.

Can you tell I like being in control? :) Type A, first-born...now you know.

    Happy Friday!

  2. This is a hard one.

Are we talking burn out, as in lose our energy? Or are we talking burn out, as in live like fire and keep doing so until that wick is gone?

Because if it's the second option, then most definitely, I'd rather burn out than fade away.

  3. I agree with Katie if it's burn like fire till the wick is gone.

  4. I guess I wasn't thinking of burning out in the same way as the others, except for Lindsay. My first instinct was to say fade away. Burning out seems so dramatic and sudden and fading away, nice and slow and easy.

  5. I want to burn out, meaning to me that I've lived a life full of fire, passionately pursuing what's most important to me.

  6. Fading away sounds like one of my nightmares. I already feel so invisible. But burn out means I can rest for a while before getting started again, as passionate as before.

  7. Hmm, not sure. Burning out sounds sort of painful, but fading away implies that we've given up and I don't like the idea of that.

  8. Burn out. At least we're giving it our all, keep going, changing, growing, until we've exhausted our energies. And that's the catch. When we burn out, we can always recharge. I'm not too certain about fading away.

  9. I think I'm going to choose fade away. Like an old, sepia print. Or a song that echoes on in people's hearts for a long time after the last chord fades.

  10. Wendy:
I like the idea of expending my energy on worthwhile endeavors. If that is burning out then that's me.
However, I have a very low energy level and am afraid I will fade away.
How's that for a confusing answer?

  11. Oh, I go with burn out, as then you haven't been sitting static at least. Fading away just seems so senseless.

  12. Fading away sounds nice. Slow, peaceful. I need to slow down and feel peace right about now! :)
